ABOUT THIS EVENT

Join us for IT FLIES UK 2026 at Swansea University on 4th June 2026!

Aerospace engineering students worldwide will test their aircraft designs in real-time flight simulations. A unique opportunity for innovation and hands-on learning.

What is IT FLIES?

IT FLIES is an annual international competition that challenges university students to design, present, and test aircraft in real-time flight simulators.

Organised by Merlin Flight Simulation Group in partnership with  ST Engineering Antycip, the competition offers students a unique opportunity to take their designs beyond the theoretical and into a simulated, real-world environment.

Using Merlin’s EXCALIBUR flight simulation software, students can showcase not only their creativity but also the practical performance of their designs.

At IT FLIES, professional test pilots fly and assess the students’ designs, bringing a whole new level of realism to the challenge.

Why Participate in IT FLIES?

  • Real-Time Simulation: Test your aircraft design in a professional-grade flight simulator with real-time feedback.
  • Professional Test Pilots: Have your design flown and evaluated by an experienced test pilot.
  • Industry Recognition: Gain exposure to top aerospace professionals and companies.
  • Global Competition: Compete with students from all over the world in both IT FLIES USA and IT FLIES UK.
  • Practical Learning: Apply your academic knowledge in a practical setting, where your design is tested under real-world conditions.

Real feedback. Real experiences.

“Competing in the 2025 IT FLIES competition was an exciting and different experience. It was great to compete against like-minded and innovative teams and have the opportunity to learn from experienced pilots and engineers. The Merlin Flight simulator is integral to the aircraft and design projects of both 3rd year and master’s students at Swansea University, as a fantastic way to visualise and refine designs. Overall, it was a challenging yet fun and informative experience.”

“The Merlin simulator provided a very convenient way to validate the calculations. Furthermore, the simulator is used to test the dynamic stability of the aircraft. IT FLIES is a fun way to compete against other students with the designed model.”

Julian GosmanAmsterdam University of Applied Sciences

“The Merlin simulators have been absolutely instrumental in the development of our final year masters group project. It allows rapid design, iteration and testing, letting us put our theoretical knowledge to the test. The IT FLIES competition has been a fun and insightful way to end our project, getting some real expert feedback on our designs that we can take with us into our future careers.”
