The Flight Simulation Society, one of the first of its kind in the UK since 2011, is increasingly successful. Combining new upgrades with industrial projects, it offers prestigious facilities. The new simulators improve realism and vastly enhance learning for students and visitors.

After participating in the ItFlies USA and UK competitions, I saw differences in education, student designs, and pilot comments. USA designs focused on previous planes, while UK designs were more varied. I had a great time connecting with students and learning about University life. It was a fantastic experience, and I hope this tradition continues.

I was excited to head to Swansea for the ItFlies! Competition. The hospitality, seamless organization by Marion, and the students’ generosity made the trip memorable. I learned about aviation from different cultural perspectives and was inspired by the professionalism and depth of the projects.
The University of Swansea was beautiful, and the competition facilities were excellent. Conversations with a professor provided great tips on using the simulator. Overall, I am extremely thankful for this amazing experience and highly recommend it to students.

My favourite part was testing it in the flight sim. Most students never see their design come to life, let alone fly. Pulling back on the stick and seeing the plane lift off was a great feeling! Running tests on the plane was fun and enlightening. The process coming full circle makes me want to improve the design and make it even better.

Participating in the IT FLIES! Competition, in the US or UK, is an experience unlike anything in my academic career. The University of Dayton has hosted the USA Competition for two years, and hosting is as exciting as travelling. The competition lasts one day, but the surrounding days are equally exciting. Spending time with aerospace peers creates a special bond. Taking guests to the National Museum of the US Air Force is enjoyable. Travelling to the UK Competition is an adventure and having test pilots fly your aircraft is a rare opportunity.

The greatest part of this experience is how the simulator is designed. I can input a plane that was just numbers from equations and have my design function. Aerospace design is often intangible, but testing it in the simulator, seeing it pitch down as expected, and fixing it on the spot was truly awesome. This program made all the months of work worth it.
