How a decade of collaboration is advancing Driver-in-the-Loop simulation

 

Over the past decade, the demands placed on Driver-in-the-Loop (DiL) simulation have changed dramatically. As virtual engineering has become central to automotive development and motorsport programmes, expectations around realism, responsiveness and visual fidelity have increased significantly.

Keeping pace with that evolution requires more than innovative products. It requires partners who continually challenge one another to push technical boundaries.

That has been the foundation of the collaboration between Antycip and Dynisma.

When Dynisma was developing its next generation of Driver-in-the-Loop simulators,  immersive visual technology was already recognised as one of the critical components of the overall simulator experience.

From the beginning, the objective wasn't simply to integrate displays into a simulator. It was to create immersive environments where every element, from motion to imagery, worked together seamlessly to give engineers and professional drivers complete confidence in what they were experiencing.

The simulation landscape today looks very different from when our collaboration began.

Vehicle development cycles have accelerated. More engineering decisions are now validated virtually before physical prototypes even exist. Motorsport teams rely on simulation daily to optimise performance, while automotive manufacturers increasingly depend on digital validation to reduce development time, cost and risk.

At the same time, the technologies supporting immersive simulation have evolved considerably.

Higher refresh rates - Greater resolutions - Ultra-low latency.

Increasingly precise synchronisation between motion and visual systems.

New generations of direct-view LED displays alongside ever more capable projection technologies.

Meeting these expectations requires every component of the simulation environment to evolve together.

Throughout our collaboration, both teams have continually evaluated how advances in visual technology could enhance simulator performance, not because newer technology is inherently better, but because every improvement in latency, image quality or synchronisation contributes to greater engineering confidence.

Turning technology into engineering solutions

Unlike many supplier relationships, this has never been about selecting a display technology and standing still.

Every new simulator programme presents different technical requirements, whether that's field of view, image quality, latency, refresh rate, installation constraints or future scalability. Each project becomes an opportunity to evaluate how emerging technologies can best support the customer's engineering objectives.

Working alongside visual technology leaders such as Barco, the partnership has continually translated advances in display technology into practical simulation environments.

Early programmes focused on high-performance multi-channel projection systems, delivering fully immersive visual environments capable of meeting the demanding requirements of professional Driver-in-the-Loop simulation. As display technologies matured, the collaboration naturally evolved alongside them.

Today, the latest generation of direct-view LED platforms, including Barco TruePix, offers new possibilities for high-end simulation. With exceptional image quality, seamless panel uniformity, ultra-low latency and high refresh rates, these technologies enable visual systems that complement the performance of modern simulation platforms rather than limiting them.

For customers, the outcome isn't simply a new display. It's a carefully engineered visual environment where motion, software and visual technologies operate as a single integrated system, allowing engineers and professional drivers to evaluate vehicle behaviour with confidence.

Over the years, that approach has supported a growing number of programmes across professional motorsport, automotive development and advanced engineering.

While many projects remain confidential, the collaboration has contributed to simulation programmes across F1, F2 and Formula E, as well as the wider automotive sector, each presenting its own technical requirements.

Across these programmes, the approach has varied considerably. Some have involved adapting existing display infrastructure to new simulator configurations, while others have required entirely new multi-channel visual systems designed around demanding requirements for resolution, refresh rate, latency, field of view and calibration.

Rather than applying a standard solution, each programme has required the visual architecture to be considered in the context of the wider simulator environment, reflecting how the collaboration has evolved alongside both Dynisma's platforms and advances in display technology.

The Demo Centre

One of the defining milestones in the collaboration has been Dynisma's Bristol Technology Campus and demonstration centre, where visitors can experience the latest generation of Driver-in-the-Loop simulation in action.

Antycip is proud to have contributed the visual technologies that support this showcase, helping demonstrate how immersive display systems complement Dynisma's world-class simulation platforms.

In many ways, the demonstration centre represents the collaborative approach that has characterised the relationship from the beginning: solving complex engineering challenges together rather than simply delivering products.

Looking Ahead

As simulation continues to evolve, so too will the technologies that support it.

LED technologies, ultra-high refresh-rate visual systems, advanced rendering pipelines and ever-more immersive environments are changing what is possible for engineering teams around the world.
